Linux...

I have been messing around more and more with Linux. I am capable of using command line, but have yet to desire it as standard (far from). Thus, I use my macbook pro.
I have come to your site often finding considerable help. And I saw that you use the Debian flavor. I had, up until now, been ready to plunge into Ubuntu.
I guess, why Debian? I have been all over the internet about this future endeavor of mine. It seems that Debian is more advanced and theoretical whereas Ubuntu is simpler and more desktop oriented. But without Debian there couldn't have been Ubuntu.
Should I work my way up to start with Ubuntu or go directly with Debian.
